Hurricane Gustav approached Louisiana while we were in New Orleans at the 3rd Katrina Memorial on August 30th, remembering the tens of thousands of dogs, cats and other animals who died during Hurricane Katrina .Mandatory evacuation got us out barely in time and we flew to New York, only to work 20 hours a day for the next 8 days to organize a major rescue effort, which we knew would now be necessary after three lucky years. Hurricane Ike was bearing down so we had to hurry back to New York, organize a convoy of rescue vehicles, board our own best friends at the vet, drive to North Caroline to pick up our 24 ft. Mobile Vet Clinic, and make it to Louisiana in between Hurricane Gustav's departure and Hurricane Ike's arrival.

By Sept 8 we had organized a 4 state, 12 organization effort, involving five vehicles and over two dozen people.
Our new mobile vet clinic was ready to deploy from North Carolina. All we needed was an invitation from one Louisiana parish to get underway. Since Companion Animal Network is both FEMA and LSART (Louisiana State Animal Rescue Team) certified we expected the invite to come at any time. It did, from Ascension Parish, and on September 10th we deployed from three states, converging with groups from New Jersey, New York, Colorado and Florida.

ALL THIS FROM VOLUNTEERS !

We had to stay ahead of Hurricane Ike and get into and out of Louisiana before contraflow was implemented. We slept in our cars for 6 days in a row, sleeping 2-3 hours a day at most, and drove for 24 continuous hours. We loaded the animals and left, trying to stay ahead of Hurricane Ike. The SUV's alternator died at midnight just as Ike's rains reached us, and then we could not find gas, almost running out several times. Exhausted but safe and sound, we made it, and delivered 58 saved dogs who would otherwise have to be put down to open up room for the newly abandoned. Our rescue transport was reported by and the .

What We Have Accomplished We were the "architect" of reforming animal control in New York City with litigation, lobbying, and legislation. The NY City Council acknowledged our efforts in Resolution #985. As a result New York City has reduced animal control killing from 100,000 a year to just 18,000 in 2007. Click here to read more.
